Friday Jr!

Today did not get off to a great start. I initially woke with a pounding headache but hit snooze and it seemed to help. However my alarm is a radio alarm and I was jolted from the sleep by my least favourite band and nemesis Nikelback. Anyone who knows me knows I can’t tolerate that band. So it’s a terrible way to arise from a slumber.

When I got up I felt like my eyes were so tiny from my allergies and I was right.

My day got better as it went on. We went to my favourite Thai restaurant for lunch and I got a chicken mango salad.

I went to the chiro today and got my orthotics. I am really hoping they are the cure to my knee and back pain. Then I went to CrossFit and my bestie was there too which is always awesome.

Today’s wod was 12 minutes every minute on the minute where for even numbers we did 5 front squats ( I did 65 lbs) and then the rest of the minute is a sprint and sit ups. Then the odd numbers was 5 strict pull ups and then again the sprint and sit ups. It felt really good to squat. I haven’t been doing much lifting in awhile.

We had some time after the wod to work on skills or lift so bestie and I decided to deadlift. To me there is no better feeling than lifting a heavy weight. I have missed it. I got a PR of 165lbs for a one rep max. Badass!! Hahaha

Hopefully I am not too sore tomorrow as I am planning on going at noon for a class since I have the day off.

Allergy season sadness

I have been telling myself this season will be different when it comes to how bad my allergies are but I think they are trying to prove me wrong. I have been waiting for them to kick in but hoping they wouldn’t but today I can’t deny it any longer. They have arrived. I wake up sniffly and sneeze all day. We ate dinner outside and now my eyes are so sore and itchy.

Today was a good day. It was really busy at work (as usual it seems). I took C to a pediatrician appt this morning and it went quite well. So that was a good feeling.

My lunch was so delicious. Last night we had our homemade pizza on a pita and I packed my lunch at the same time. J suggested putting some of the pizza toppings in my salad and what a treat it turned out to be! It was so yummy!

Then after work I went to CrossFit and the wod was a butt kicker. Big time. I was left gasping and sweating profusely.

Our warm up had a max effort 500m row which in itself had me out of breath. Then the wod was a 20 min AMRAP (as many rounds as possible) of the following:

15 dumbbell snatch with the right arm
30 kettle bell swings
15 dumbbell snatch with the left arm
30 kettle bell swings
15 dumbbell push press with the right arm
30 box jumps
14 kettle bell push press with the left arm
30 box jumps

I got through exactly 1.5 rounds. What a workout!

After getting home and showered we went across the street to James parents house for dinner. It was delicious and we ate out on the porch enjoying the nice country air (despite my sneezing and sore puffy eyes). Charlotte got to play with the calves a bit before we left. Here is a picture of Helen. She is so precious. She is blind and is so friendly.

One more day and then it’s my weekend. It’s a nice short week for me.

Tabata Tuesday

Today started off rough for me. I woke up in a bad mood and I blame it on the rainy gloomy day we were having. I hated my outfit which didn’t help anything either.

Work was one of those days where everyone wants to meet with me. This is normally fine except I wasn’t in the mood to talk to anyone. And we had a fire alarm. Needless to say I wasn’t sad to see the work day end.

We made make your own pizzas for dinner which was fun to do all together. Of course mine had fresh pineapple on it. Then after dinner I decided to make a recipe I have been wanting to try. I made protein cookies. They turned out pretty good but I think I could do some tweaking to the recipe to make it even better.

I think they will be a good option to pack for right after a workout since I don’t normally get home for awhile after a workout to make something to eat.

Another exciting event today was my purchase of a Tabata timer app for my phone. If you are unfamiliar with Tabata it is basically short interval workouts with rest periods. So it is 20s of work and then 10s of rest. You do it for a total of 4 min or 8 intervals. Sounds easy but keep in mind you have to give max effort when working. I did a plank Tabata tonight. I think I am going to attempt one a day.

Monday’s “Murph” Workout

Yesterday was Memorial Day in the US and after doing some research (I love the internet!) I learned about the origin’s of the “Murph” workout. I also learned that many CF locations do this WOD on Memorial Day.

The WOD was named Murph in memory of Navy Lieutenant Michael Murphy, 29, of Patchogue, N.Y. who was killed in Afghanistan June 28th, 2005.

This workout was one of Mike’s favorites and is performed by Crossfitters in his memory.

The WOD consists of:

1 mile run
100 pull ups
200 push ups
300 squats
1 mile run

I have done this WOD three times now. I haven’t ever done it in full on my own, I have done it as part of a partner workout. Last night was the same, we did it in teams. I love team workouts because your team pushes you and you won’t give up because you are all working together.

A positive about this was that I did both the 1 mile runs in total and did not have problems with my knee. The second one bothered me at the last bit of it but I pulled through and it is not sore today. Bonus.

Today is normally my rest day but I am itching to do something. I had planned to do a workout at the playground when C is at her dance class but now it is a very rainy gloomy day so I don’t know if that will happen. I might try one of the million ab workouts I have seen on Pinterest instead when I get home. I love Pinterest.

So I will leave with this which will properly describe how I am feeling today.

What a weekend!!!

Where do I start when talking about my amazing weekend? My love took me for a weekend away to Toronto to take in two baseball games. We are big baseball fans and we love our Toronto Blue Jays.

Saturday was game one. We had seats on the third base line. This was our view.

Then when the game was over (sadly we lost) we headed back to our hotel for a rest. Then we went to dinner at The 3 Brewers. It was delicious.

J had a smoked meat flam (kind of like a pizza) and I had a chicken tenders salad.

Today was day 2 and we went to our second game. We first went for breakfast and a restaurant called Fran’s. I wish I had pictures of our meals because they were incredible.

The game was a great one. We say in the outfield. The seats were ok but it was really hot in the sun so we decided to check out the new viewing concourse and it did not disappoint. Check out this view.

We decided to spend the rest of the game here. The game was down to the wire. It was the bottom of the ninth inning and we were down by 2 runs. Time to get our rally caps on.

And it worked!!! Kawasaki won the game! The crowd was nuts and everyone in our section was high fiving each other and jumping up and down!!! Kawasaki was pretty excited too.

As if all that excitement wasn’t enough we decided to hit up one of the restaurants we saw on You Gotta Eat Here. And we went to Banh Mi Boys. We got Kimchi fries and I got the Kabel beef taco and J got the Pork Belly Banh Mi. It was to die for delicious.

All that eating and baseball watching has made us very very tired. Can’t wait to do it again though.

I’m back…cautiously

So tonight I did something that I haven’t done in a while. Lifting. I have been taking a break to let my back heal and tonight I tried a lift again. It felt so good!

I did strict press and was able to lift 70 lbs! Not a PR but matched my current PR. If only I had added a couple more pounds! But I am glad I stopped where I did because I don’t want to hurt myself again.

Then when I got home for dinner I made something I have been meaning to try. Zucchini lasagna. It turned out great.

No excuses

I have really fallen off the wagon when it comes to diet. And I can’t blame anyone but myself. And I can’t make excuses anymore such as “I had a bad day so I deserve it” or ” I will start Monday”. I am the queen of excuses. I need to be accountable for myself and my choices. I can see and feel my body changing and not for the better. I have worked so hard to tone my muscles and burn the body fat so it is disappointing to see that all fall apart.

I am very disciplined when it comes to my workouts so I don’t understand why I can’t instil that same discipline when it comes to diet. So I am going to try again.

This time with a friend. I am hoping that with the two of us being accountable to each other it will be easier to stick to it.

This weekend though I am going away for a preplanned special weekend with my love so I will let myself relax for that.

I also found a way to fit some fitness on to today when I couldn’t make it to the gym. I went for a short run while C was in her dance class and then set up my mat on the grassy area near the parking lot and did some ab work. And I feel great!

The way down was awesome but as always what goes down must get back up and it was a hell of a run uphill! But I did it. No excuses.
