Making Progress

Wednesday night WOD happened later than usual but it still happened.  I missed my usual class with my usual peeps because I stayed a little later at work, so I went to the next one.  There were only two of us there for it.  The owner and his girlfriend were there lifting… I witnessed him deadlift 555lbs.  Pretty impressive.  And then our coach for the day was there as well.  He got us started with a warmup and row etc…. the usual.  Then we did our strength WOD.

3 x 10 front squats

5 x 1 push press

I did my first set of front squats with the just the 35lb bar and worked up to 55.  By the 6th one I started to feel pain in my quad where I injured myself, so I just did less reps.  The push press went well.  I worked up to 80lbs for my last one.  That’s the heaviest I have lifted since my injury and it felt good.  I know I could have done more, but I didn’t want to do too much, especially since there was push press in the WOD too.

WOD- 5 rounds

3 min AMRAP

3 burpees to plate

5 push press

8 lunges

This is one of those WOD’s where you see it on the board and think, oh ok, that looks good.  But really it’s a gasser.  I knew better because I got there a little early to do some extra rolling on my legs and feet and saw the previous class when they were just finished round 2 and they already looked spent.  I had to do a modified burpee and used 55 lbs for the first 3 min round for my push press but then I dropped it to 45lbs.  I also switched from lunges to air squats about halfway because they were bothering my leg.  I averaged about 4 rounds per 3 minute round.  I felt good about it.  It really was an ass kicker though, I left there so sweaty.  I felt bad for the person behind me in line at the gas station because I probably didn’t smell very good.

Tonight is Halloween festivities and we are taking C trick or treating.  She is SO excited.  She woke up super early to check if it was raining.  It is a rainy day and unfortunately the forecast says it isn’t going to let up at all.  I doubt it will stop any of the kids tonight though.

Hope everyone has a happy and safe Halloween!

Race ready… I think

I used to run. A lot. And then I took some time off for awhile because I had a lot of knee issues. Well IT band issues. I also ran as therapy during a really challenging time of my life. It’s really what got me through. Well along with an incredibly supportive family and group of friends. Then I decided it was time to take a break from running and try a new chapter. That’s when I joined CrossFit. That’s shown me new challenges, something different that I needed.

Lately I have been a little bit more drawn to running again. I think it was because I had to take some time off from everything when I was first injured and it made me very anxious. That anxiety is what got me running in the first place. So when I got the ok from my chiro I laced up the trusty Mizuno’s and tried a run. I have only done short runs, quick little 3kms and it’s felt pretty awesome.

This weekend I am doing the 5 km run at the Hamilton Road to Hope. The same race I did my half marathon at two years ago. I decided to go for a quick run tonight and it felt awesome! I felt so free and didn’t want to stop!

I think I will try and go once a week for awhile and see how I do. I have also signed up for the 15 km relay with my sister at the Around the Bay race in March so I need to keep at it for that reason as well. I feel like CrossFit has kept me in such good shape that it was easy to get back into it.

Last nights CrossFit recap. We did Jackie. It’s a nasty workout. It’s a 1000m run, 50 thrusters and 30 pull ups. I did push press instead of thrusters to save my leg from all the squats. Everyone used 45 lbs for the weight. It’s safe to say Jackie kicked my ass.

Hope everyone is having a great week so far! I’m feeling pretty great!

What’s your favourite Halloween candy?

Mine is always peanut butter cups. Always.

Have you got any races or CrossFit competitions coming up?

Weekend Workouts and Halloween Hooligans

This was a busy and fun filled weekend, hence the lack of posts from me.  Sorry, my social calendar was rammed!  I did make it to Crossfit Friday after work as well as Saturday morning.   Friday I am having trouble remembering exactly what the workout was.  I know there were some backsquats, box steps, sit ups…. but I can’t recall the exact wod to give a proper run down of it.  Friday night C was at her Dad’s and J and I went to our favourite pub for dinner.

Saturday morning we did in teams of three.  One person would do a 200 m row, one would do sit ups and the other would work on the AMRAP that included, clean and jerk, burpees, pull ups, kettle bell swings, push press, and  back squats.  Then when the rower was done we would rotate.  It was a good one because there was a lot of change up with it.  It was a 27 min AMRAP.  After crossfit I made a quick stop for some last minute costume touches.  I also had a really bad headache Saturday morning.  I get them in relation to the weather and Saturday was a miserable day out.  It rained all day long.  I took some sinus pills and managed to keep it mostly at bay.   I did some groceries for the week and made J and I a really healthy orange chicken meal.  Sorry- no pics.  Blogger fail.  We went by a friends house for a couple drinks before our night out- in costumes.  Unfortunately no one else was in costume at this house so it felt a little awkward.  Then we headed down to the bar and met our other friends down there.  We had a blast.  I did my hair using instructions I found on Pinterest and guess what??!!  It actually turned out amazing!  See for yourself!

We had a blast and I already can’t wait for next year to do it all over again!  I normally don’t love getting dressed up but I felt like this year’s costume really came together nicely.

Sunday was a quiet day of napping.  I did a bunch of meal prep.  I baked some chicken breasts and made some beets with a orange/ honey vinaigrette.  I am enjoying that for lunch today.  I took a picture but it’s not that exciting so I am not going to bother posting it.  This is a busy week and the countdown to Halloween is on!  I will be helping C get the finishing touches on her costume tonight.  She has a wig that does not want to cooperate so we have to figure that out tonight.

Hope you all have a great week!

Are you dressing up at all for Halloween?

J insists we dress up for trick or treating.  I prefer to just wear warm clothes.

Do you spend time on the weekend doing meal prep?

I have to try otherwise my eating slips quickly into quick and unhealthy choices.

Planks, Pitas and Pickling

Wednesday always has a silver lining simply because it’s the middle of the week as we are halfway to the weekend. It’s also a workout day for me. I headed to crossfit after work and got my sweat on.

First I must tell you about my chiro appointment. I had an assessment to see my progress since my injury. My range of motion is almost perfect and she said my strength has improved greatly so that made me feel great. I still can’t do everything but I am definitely getting there.

The strength wod was 10 heavy front squats with a pause at the bottom. I decided to avoid this and did Tuesdays SWOD instead. 3 sets of 10 push press. I tried 55 lbs but it was too heavy for 10 reps. When I set up my bar I was setting it up thinking I was doing push press but it quickly got heavy when I started doing a strict press. So I lowered it to 45lbs.

The WOD was (my modified version) a 12 min AMRAP: 3 clean and jerk, 10 sit-ups and 20 skips

The sit-ups were supposed to be toes to bar or knees to elbows but that motion really bothered my hip so I had to do sit-ups. I was kind of bummed because knees to elbows are killer for the core.

After the WOD I asked my coach to time me for my plank. I was supposed to do a 2.5 minute plank. He used his stopwatch instead of the big clock so I couldn’t see the time. There was lots of encouragement from the class. It felt like an eternity. When he finally counted down from 10 and I dropped he told me that I had actually done 3:05!!! He tricked me but it was amazing. I can’t believe I held it that long.

Later in the evening I went to J’s aunts house and we made pickled beets. She was so nice and offered to help me because she knows that I loved them. It was actually a much easier process than I thought.

I can’t wait to try them! I also was given a bunch of beets to bring home that I can cook on my own. I have a few recipes that I would love to try. And now I know how to peel them really easily. Gloves are required for sure.

Today was a rest day so no crossfit. Just a quiet night at home. No complaints about that. And we are almost at the weekend!!

This weekend is exciting because we have some pretty fun plans for Saturday to celebrate Halloween! I am sure there will be pictures here for you all.

Do you like pickled beets?

Have you got any beet recipes to share?

One Size Fits All? Nope

Tuesday night I decided to go for a run while C was in her singing class. I really wasn’t feeling it and would has preferred to get a Starby and sit and read my book. But I figured I have a 5km run coming up in a couple weeks and haven’t been running much so I should really do it. It was a chilly day so I figured I needed to pull out my full tights instead of the crops or shorts I usually wear. I could not find them anywhere.  I searched every drawer and my closet but no luck. So I remembered I had bought these cozy sounding fleece lined leggings and I grabbed those. I wore my warm running socks and a tank and a long sleeve running shirt. I even packed my ear warmer head band.

I was warm enough. I had chosen perfectly. I wore my old running shoes because I have been noticing my calves have been sore lately after a run so I thought I would go back to my old runners- my Mizuno’s and that was a good decision. No pain in my calves. But the leggings were a big mistake. When I bought them they only came in one size. One size fits all. Really? Does it? No it doesn’t. Not in this case. And unfortunately for me I discovered this during a run. I pretty much had to hold my pants up during the whole run!

Running warmth… and I’ve missed these shoes

I forgot how good it feels to run in the fall.  I love the leaves and I love when it’s cooler out.  I find it easier to keep going, and it feels good with the cold air.  When I got back to C’s music school I noticed my breath was really wheezy.  It wasn’t hard to breathe or anything, there was just a whistling sound coming from deep in my chest.  So strange.  It went away as I warmed up.

When we got home I did my plank.  It was supposed to be 2.5 minutes.  This was my second attempt at it.  J was out, so I was on my own.  I decided to set the timer and hide my phone so I couldn’t watch the clock.  I think that strategy worked.  I dropped one knee a couple times and then I just lost it and dropped.  It’s totally mental… I know I could have kept going despite the fact that everything hurt.  I was so mad when I saw I only had 10 seconds left!!!  UGH!  I was SO close!  I have another try tonight to get it.

Hope everyone has a great day!  We are halfway to the weekend!

What is your favourite season?

I think mine is probably Spring.

Reunited and It Feels So Good!

Well friends, all is right in the world again.  J is home and we are back to normal.  It was so nice to see him and have him home.

Yesterday seemed like the longest day ever because I was excited all day for him to return (yes I know it was only 4 days, but it felt like eternity).  I went to Crossfit after work and it was a terrible workout.  The WOD wasn’t terrible, it was me.  I had NO energy.  My leg was killing me and I had to modify the whole workout.  It felt like it would never end and I just wasn’t into it.  It was five rounds and I thought about quitting after round 3 and again after 4 but I didn’t.  I kept going.

missed workout

I guess this is true… at least I went and finished it

I think there are a lot of reasons why my workout just wasn’t working for me.  One is I didn’t drink a lot of water over the weekend, so I was likely dehydrated.  I need to up my water intake for sure.  I am working on it today.  Also, I have been eating some pretty crappy foods the last little while and I am sure that didn’t help.  Finally, lack of sleep.  I definitely haven’t been getting enough sleep and that affects my whole day, not just my workout.

Anyway- the WOD.  5 rounds, 1 minute rowing, 1 minute push ups, 1 minute weighted sit ups, 1 minute rest.  This was the modified version of the workout I did.  The rest of the class did different movements.  It was kind of a version of Fight Gone Bad I think.  We also did a strength WOD of back squats and strict pull ups.  I chose not to squat and did push press.  We did 5 rounds of 2 reps, with 3 pull ups in between.  I didn’t go higher than 55lbs which is light for me for 2 reps.   That just shows how weak I was feeling yesterday.

After we got home we got organized and showered etc and then J came home!  C went running outside to greet him and I couldn’t stop hugging him (awwwww).  I made us these quesadillas for dinner and they turned out delicious.  I used cheese and the ground sausage, tomato and artichoke mixture I cooked up Sunday night and served it with a fried egg on top.  Delicious!!  I really liked it with the egg.  It added some good flavour.

Tonight is our busy night so I don’t think there will be anything too exciting to post about later.  Hope everyone is having a Happy Tuesday!

Halloween is coming- any exciting plans??

We are going to two different events this weekend.

Do you like dressing up?

I am really not a fan of it, but I love going out to the dress up events.  It’s fun seeing all the costumes.

That Old Saying is Right…

You know the old saying “absence makes the heart grow fonder”? Well I am living proof of it this weekend. J has been away since early Friday and I miss him so much! It’s so weird not having him around and not being able to talk to him throughout the day.

Today was a good day. We were still at my parents house. We got up and did a little shopping. I got some groceries and C got a cute outfit. My sister and her boyfriend came for lunch and he had just run the Toronto half marathon. He ran it in one hour and a half! Insane how fast he is. Last night my sister and I registered for the Around The Bay relay. It’s 15km for each of us. We did it last year and it is an awesome finish line. There’s an amazing energy at the end of that race. And the 2014 race is on my birthday!!!

After lunch we went to visit my friend E who was one of my closest friends from University. She is amazing. She is a teacher and a mom of three boys. We had a nice visit and then headed home. I got a few things done around the house. I made a sausage and artichoke and tomato mixture for the week for lunches. C was exhausted from the day. We are having a sleepover tonight and I have been instructed to bring her into my bed when I go to bed.

Another exciting piece of news is my sister got me these:

Oh Yeah bars are my favourite protein bar and these are flavours I have never tried. I can’t wait to try them!

Tonight I was supposed to do a 2.5 minute plank and I just couldn’t do it. I dropped after a minute. My abs are killing me. I think they are catching up to me! And it’s so hard to do when I don’t have anyone watching and tellingly to hold on. Watching the clock myself is awful.

Well J will be home tomorrow so life will be back to normal. Only one more sleep 🙂

What was the best part of your weekend?
