Hurting Hammies and Getting Organized

This weekend has been so wonderful.  I have loved every minute of it.  I am already getting the Sunday night blues as I sit and type this.  I got so much done and had so much fun.  Friday I went to CrossFit after work and happily discovered we were working on our deadlifts.  We did them in the strength workout and did 10 lifts.  We did them as deficit deadlifts, so I stood up on a 45 lb plate.  By being elevated it meant you had to reach lower for the bar.  It worked the hamstrings A LOT more and I am still feeling it today.  I worked up to 165 lbs and stopped there.  Then we did the wod which was nuts!  Basically it was 150 push ups but everytime you had to break, you did 10 squats.  I started with no knees and did regular push ups and did 25 of them before dropping to my knees.  My arms felt soooo jacked after.  So of course I had to take a selfie of my arms.

When I got home we got ready to go out and we went bowling.  C was pretty excited when I picked her up and told her were going bowling.  We had a blast and realized once we got there that on our one week Anniversary we were bowling just like we did on our very first date!  Awwwwwwww.  We then went for Yogurtys and filled up before we got home and went to bed.

Saturday morning we got up and C and I headed to the gym after breakfast.  It was a partner workout.  We started working on finding our 2 RM on our front squats.  We worked in partners sharing a rack and the catch was every time you went for a plate you had to do walking lunges and walk back with the plate overhead.  My already sore hammies were not a fan.  We worked the front squats and I managed to get a PR on my 2 RM and got 115 lbs.  The squats felt solid.  Then we got into the workout.

2000m row – one partner rows while the other wall sits

200 wall balls- one does wall balls while the other holds plank

100 burpees- one does burpees while the other holds chin to bar

This was tough.  There was a 20 minute time cap so we just got 21 burpees in.  The rowing was tough, and no one likes wall balls- do they?  I think I might hate them more than burpees.  Whaaaaat???

After we finished there I took C to get her hair cut.  Then she went to her Grandma’s house.  I got home and got showered and ate lunch.  I did some organizing and clean up around the house.  Then I did some errands including a Target trip.  I got some Christmas shopping done and then met my friend who was also our wedding photographer for a coffee and got a sneak peek of our wedding pictures!!!  It was so exciting and the ones I saw turned out SO good.  I can’t wait to see the rest.   Saturday night J and I met friends for dinner and then we played Euchre at their house.

This morning I got up and texted J (at work) and asked if he wanted to go for breakfast.  We went to one of our favourite places called The Harbour Diner.  Friends if you have never been here and live in the Hamilton area, you need to go.  They have the most amazing breakfast specials.  Today I had a hard time deciding between the Peanut Butter and Banana stuffed French toast, or the Asian Pulled Pork Benedict.  I went with the benedict and it was really yummy.  J got a seafood chowder benedict.  We both really enjoyed our breakfasts.  Then we did groceries on the way home.  The weather today was incredible!  It was up to 12 degrees this afternoon, so nice and mild.  Of course I had to take advantage and go for a run.

It was nice to be out.  I managed to do 5 km and felt like I could have kept going, but I haven’t been running as often lately and still have sore hammies so I thought I better not push it.

This afternoon after I got home I put away some laundry and did some more laundry.  J was in charge of dinner and I am pretty excited about it.  Then I finished up our DIY project I mentioned we have been working on.  I saw a bunch of different examples on Pinterest which is where we got our inspiration and we made it happen.  Check it out!

We have always had chaos in our entrance way and this makes it so much more organized now!  I am pretty excited about it.  Now… how long can we keep it this clean?  I guess we will soon find out.  I will make another post that tells you how we made this in case you love it so much you want to do it too!  PS- can you spot the kitten photobomb?!

Wallballs- love them or hate them?

I do NOT enjoy them.

DIY- are you good at it?

I normally am not but maybe I am turning a corner?

Back to the Grind

Today was back to work after a week off. The week was way too short and I wish I could have slowed down time a little. I definitely didn’t feel ready to go back but that’s life right? I struggled to get out of bed but we did pretty good falling back into our regular routine.

I had my morning shake and got ready for work in good time. C was very good and got herself ready without too much hassle and we started off the morning pretty smoothly.

Work was busy and I got out of there at a decent time. I hit up the 5:15 class at CrossFit and it was a much needed stress reliever. When I saw the wod I am not going to lie I wanted to turn right around and leave. So. Much. Rowing. But my friend and I unknowingly wore matching outfits so I couldn’t just leave. So I did what anyone else would do and took a selfie.

We started with a strength wod that was 5 sets of 5 front squats and in between 5 sets of 5 strict pull ups. We started with the hardest band and worked down as needed. I am proud to say I stayed with the hardest two bands and never had to go to the easiest one. Boom! For the front squats I worked up to 95 lbs.

1000 m row
50 squats
3 x 1 min planks
50 squats
500 m row

That was a tough wod for sure. The rowing killed me. I had a real tightness in what I thought was my calf so I stopped a couple times to roll it. Since I have been home though the whole side of my lower leg is so sore and locked up. It’s even moving into my foot. I did take one more selfie because I felt really strong today.

J and I planned a healthy dinner tonight because we have been really indulgent since the wedding. I’m talking one pound peanut butter cups indulgent. So he grilled us some salmon and I made some sweet potato tots and we had salad. It was nice to get some salad in my system.

The rest of the night included the usual married couple stuff, getting C ready for bed, doing dishes and J building Ikea furniture. As soon as our DIY project we have been working on is complete I will share it with you so you can all be as excited about it as I am.

Do you DIY?
I don’t which is why I’m even more excited to see it come together.

My People

Getting married made me realIze how many important people I have in my life and how lucky I am to have them. When you are up at that head table looking out at everyone there to celebrate the love you have for each other it’s an amazing feeling. They were all there for us, sharing in our joy and celebrating our love. It’s such a great feeling.

The days leading up to the wedding are surrounded by your people too. We had people that travelled to be there. My Uncle came in from Boston and it was nice to see him. He was there for the rehearsal dinner. We had all our wedding party and family at that dinner and it was so nice to be together. The day before some of my wedding party came to the spa and the morning of most of the girls were there for hair and makeup.

My one bridesmaid came all the way from Vancouver! I have special friendships with each of them and I am so lucky to have them in my life.

My sister J.

She planned an amazing Bachelorette and came from 2 hours away many times for wedding events. She wrote the most amazing speech that I will never forget. She has always been there for me and my wedding was no different. I’m so lucky to have her.

My friend L. She flew in on a red eye flight to be there for the rehearsal and it meant the world to me.

She also popped the champagne which gave us this epic picture.

L has been that friend that I can tell anything too and she won’t judge me. In fact most times she totally gets it. We spend hours on the phone and excited to celebrate her wedding with her next year!!!

Then there’s my friend N.

She was by my side for some very low points in my life. I credit her for even being where I am today. She stood by me and showed me that I deserve the happiness that I finally found.

My new sister K.

She welcomed me into the family immediately and we have had so much fun in the years that J and I have been together. K did such a touching speech with a song in it that she sang (she has a beautiful voice) and I feel so happy to say we are now officially sisters.

Finally my sweet C.

She is my angel that makes every day brighter. I love the life we have created for her and she deserves every happiness. She had a busy few days and she was a real trooper. I am so glad we will have this memory together.

These girls along with all my other amazing family members and friends made this day as magical as it was and I will be eternally grateful to each and every one of them.  Love you guys forever.  xoxo

Our Weekend Getaway and Back to Reality

J and I went away for the weekend after the wedding to have some down time. We stayed at a hotel where all my family was the night of the wedding and we all had breakfast together, including some of my friends that were visiting as well.

We headed to Niagara Falls for a couple of days and it was wonderful. We had a beautiful room with the most amazing view.

The first day we had the most amazing nap. We got there in the afternoon and spent hours just relaxing. I felt unbelievably relaxed which was so nice after a very hectic week before. We went out for the most delicious dinner at this Italian place called Napoli’s. I would go back there in an instant it was so good. We started with a Caesar salad and rice balls which have a prettier Italian name that I totally can’t recall now. I had a Caesar to drink and it was so yummy.

For my dinner I had the most delicious ravioli I have ever had in my life. It was so light and fluffy.

absolutely amazing. I want to go back.
absolutely amazing. I want to go back.

Then we had Tiramisu for dessert and I didn’t think I would like it but it was amazing. We were both stuffed. We went back to the room and I crashed and had an amazing sleep.

The next day we went to the touristy area and did some fun tourist stuff. We spent some time playing arcade games and hanging out at the bar and that was really fun. Then we went to this really cool brewery called “Syndicate Brewery”.

so many delicious choices

There we had a tasting of different beer and I chose a Vanilla Wheat beer. We shared a duck poutine and fish tacos.

these were really good. sadly, no picture of the duck poutine because we ate it too fast.

We had some more relaxing time in the hotel and went for a late dinner. We went to Canyon Creek and ate like royalty. The food was really good and we got a romantic fallsview table.

We headed to the casino after and played some slots. I won $50 which was perfect because we spent $40 so we actually even made money! Sadly the next morning we had to head home back to real life. It was nice because we picked up all our gifts and spent some time reading cards and opening presents. It was so nice to see how happy our friends and family were for us.

I actually had time to make it to my usual 415 class at the gym so I headed in to do that. It felt great to be back and working out again. Our strength wod was 10 sets of 2 back squats working to a 2 rm. I worked up to 140 lbs and felt so strong!

The wod:
18 min AMRAP
5 pull ups
10 push ups
15 squats
20 mountain climbers
25 flutter kicks

I even had a new outfit on that I got from the lululemon outlet we hit up on our way home.

It felt good to be back at the gym after a couple days off but I did really enjoy the rest days.  I also made it to Tuesday morning for one more visit with my morning friends before heading back to work (booooo).  It was nice to see them all and they were all so excited to hear about the wedding.

The rest of the day was spent trying to organize my life after the break.  It felt good to have the extra day to get groceries and meal prep and just clean up and put stuff away.  Back to real life I suppose.  Only now I get to do it all with my husband.  xoxo

Do you find it hard to get back to it after a couple of days off?

I don’t actually.  I look forward to it.

What a Whirlwind

Wow.  Where do I even start?  I have been MIA because I GOT MARRIED!!!!!  The last week has been absolutely amazing and I have loved EVERY single minute of it.  Let’s go back to last week.  I worked Monday.  I had so much on my mind I decided I was going to take Tuesday off to just get stuff done and not stress and I was so glad I did.  I ended up getting a lot done that day.  I went to CrossFit Monday night (no workout to report because I can’t remember).  Then since I was off the rest of the week I joined the morning classes and attended the 9:15 am class Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday.  It was such a fun group of ladies and I made some new friends.  My Mom and Dad came on Wednesday morning and my Mom and I had some running around to do.  Mother Nature stressed me out because it snowed the week before the wedding and it was messy roads the Wednesday.  We had a lot of errands to run and it really slowed us down.

Thursday morning I went to the gym and my coach had a special “wedding workout” planned for us.  It was so sweet and started off my pre-wedding day so perfectly.

my special workout

After I did my workout, I went home and got cleaned up.  I headed over to the hotel my parents were staying at and my sister’s family had also arrived.  We went and grabbed a quick bite to eat and headed for a ladies day of pampering.  We got manicures and pedicures and got ourselves nice and prettied up for the next day.  That night we had our rehearsal and a dinner at our favourite pub following that.  Then my bestie L who was in town from Vancouver for the big day came back with us to the hotel and we had a sleepover.  When I woke up the next morning I couldn’t believe this day we had been planning for was finally here.

Hair and Makeup started early and we had it done by an amazing friend of mine in our hotel room.  It was really fun to have all the girls together getting ready together.  There was so much excitement in the air and it was so nice for me to be surrounded by my closest friends and family. I was feeling pretty calm for most of the morning but when it got closer to leave I started to feel more anxious.

the girls sharing a toast

We got to the hall just before 3 and had an hour to get my dress on and take a few photos.  The girls helped me with my dress and that’s when it got really real for me.  I started to get really emotional, but not with nerves, just being so incredibly happy and excited to see J.  I can’t explain the emotions.  I have NEVER felt so happy in my life as I felt that day.  It was so overwhelming.

When it was time to walk in I was overcome with emotion, especially when I heard the music start.  The song was so perfect.  I took a lot of time to select the music for the ceremony and it worked out so perfectly.  So emotional and so beautiful.  I walked down the aisle to “Every Little Thing She Does is Magic”, covered by the band Sleeping at Last.  You can listen to it here.

I cried when I walked in.  J had tears (he won’t admit it), and when I got to the front of the room we kissed.  Totally not supposed to but it was just instinct!  It was so funny and a good ice breaker.  The ceremony was really emotional, and when we said our vows I cried…. again.  So many tears, but the perfect most amazing ceremony.  I couldn’t have asked for anything more.  It was EXACTLY what I had hoped for.

The rest of the night was so much fun, and it was over way too quickly.   I honestly wanted to be in that moment forever.  Here are a few highlights.

And just like that.  It’s over.  My beautiful dream of a wedding.  I couldn’t have asked for anything more perfect.  My family was amazing, my friends were all there, and we had amazing people standing by our side.  J and I enjoyed a getaway for a couple days after the wedding and I will give a recap of that in a later post.

Sorry for the photo overload… and I can’t promise that will be it.

Married people- favourite part of the day?

Mine was the ceremony hands down.

Crossing it All Off the List

Friday night was really relaxing and a lot of fun.  Our best m’aam came over to hang out with me and we talked about wedding details and we were both so excited about how soon it is.  It was nice to be able to show her all the stuff I have prepared and explain all my plans.  We had a nice dinner and she brought us lattes.  After she left I watched Grey’s Anatomy and got caught up with them.  Our cats were so cute, they get along great and last night they were cuddling on the couch!!!

I. Can't. Even.
I. Can’t. Even.

I had a terrible sleep.  My mind is working overtime and I just couldn’t get to sleep.  At least I didn’t have to get up early.  When I got up and came downstairs, J got home shortly after and brought me a tea.  What a sweetheart.  I made myself some leftover sweet potato hash with egg on it and some turkey bacon.  The perfect pre workout meal.  I got ready for the gym and C and I headed out.  I wore my bride tank in honour of my last Saturday workout not married.

The workout was with partners and it was pretty killer.  There were two wods and the first one was brutal.  I liked the second one better.  My partner and I did awesome though.

WOD 1- 15 min AMRAP

15 wall ball

15 kettlebell swings

15 thrusters

15 double unders

15 slam balls

Working with a partner, one does the first movement and does the 15 reps, while the other did manmakers, then switch.  The total manmakers were tallied up.  We got to 60 something.

WOD 2- 15 min AMRAP

15 lunges

15 goblet squats

15 push ups

15 push press

15 box step ups

15 burpees

For this one the partner was doing sit ups- we got to 345 total.

I liked this workout because it had a lot of different movements in it.  The weights got heavy fast too.  I love starting off the day with a workout, it leaves me feeling so ready to face the day.  C and I then headed to Micheal’s and Target to get some things we needed and I could cross them off my list.  I got a few things covered off there.  Then we went home and I made us all tortilla pizzas, no picture because we ate them way too fast.

I then had to do some more errands after lunch and a shower, including a dress fitting.  There were a few more changes I want them to make to it.  I go back on Wednesday hopefully to pick it up!  I had to finalize the seating plan and send that in as well.  I made some serious progress on my to do list.  I am feeling pretty good about it.  I hope I can sleep better tonight.  I will be heading out for a little girls night in a couple of hours to celebrate a friend who is expecting a baby.

I think it will be good to get my mind off all the things stressing me out.  So much going on!

What was your Saturday workout?

Do you normally do a morning workout on Saturdays?

The Home Stretch

Holy Crap it’s one week until my wedding!  This time next week I will already be married!  I am so excited I can’t even stand it.  I just want the time to fly by.  This week did go pretty quick because I was so incredibly busy.  Wednesday I made it to my usual class at CrossFit.  The wod was way tougher than it looked once I got started.  We started with some skill work and we worked on pistols.  I am happy to report I totally got them and was able to do some- only on the one leg could I get all the way down.  It felt pretty awesome because I haven’t been able to do them before.  I also got to rock my new tank Wednesday night and I got some compliments.

I love my lululemon
I love my lululemon

The wod:

EMOTM for 12 minutes

5 burpees

rest of the min thrusters (I used 12 lbs)

This was painful.  I found it really tough to catch my breath in between rounds.  My lungs aren’t what they were pre-pneumonia yet.  I went back to the doctor for my follow up and he thought it sounded better.  I do have a puffer now to use during workouts when I need it.

Thursday morning I got up and did a short workout just to get moving and get off to a good start.  I did a few rounds with squats, push ups and v-sits.  I also decided to finally take my progress pics for my coach and take my measurements and I was so excited to see the end result.  I say the end but it’s not, I have no intention of stopping now.

When I think about all the work and dedication that I put in I feel so proud of myself.  I didn’t miss out on anything.  I just thought about my food choices and decided if I REALLY wanted it or not.  I drank a lot less beer and alcohol over the summer, but I still indulged when I wanted to.  Having a meal plan to follow really helped me, and I also had a lot of support from my friends and family.

This is the thing I learned the most.  Just the workouts weren’t going to get me to my goal.  I had to look long and hard at my eating habits and make some changes.  I am so glad I did, not just because of the results physically but also with how I feel.  I FEEL healthier.  I also went from a weight of 137 to 122lbs.  Changes.  And people can see it and it feels pretty awesome.

Thursday evening I got home and had time to workout before J got home and was debating skipping it but a friend of mine texted me and said, don’t skip it.  She even texted me some workout ideas.  I ended up doing 300 squats and 200 sit ups and then did some arm work with my dumbbells.  I was glad I got it done.

Today I managed to get out of work on time to hit up CrossFit again.  Today’s was a killer!

5 rounds

1 min plate push

1 min wall sit

1 min squats

1 min plank

1 min push ups

1 min box step ups

I was really glad when that was over.  I plan to be back at it again tomorrow morning!  This weekend there is a ton for me to do.  I have a bunch of errands to do to get ready for the big day NEXT WEEK!

I hope you all had an amazing week!

What are you proud of lately?

How do you convince yourself to workout when you are feeling lazy?

I often text a friend who I know will tell me to get up and get to it.  it works!
