Sunshine and Squats

Mother Nature finally seems to have figured out that it’s Spring.  I hope I am not speaking too soon but it’s warmed up finally in these parts.  There’s something about the warm weather that just brings out the best in people, including me.  I am happier about everything.


Sunday was really nice out so I decided I needed to go for a run.  I went to one of my favourite routes which is just over 3 km.  I didn’t want to push it since I was still suffering from seriously sore hamstrings.  Though, the run actually helped, I find it better to just keep moving.  Part of the run is on this path that I just love running on.

The path actually was busy with lots of people out on walks with their kids and dogs.  And of course, some other runners.  I did manage to find some alone time to sneak in a selfie.

IMG_8711I realize it’s not the prettiest picture with that wrinkled forehead but it was sunny!!!  So you get the point.  It was a nice way to end the weekend for sure.  Monday was cooler out, but it didn’t stop us from running during our wod.

This week is our gym’s 5th anniversary so every day this week is the anniversary wod from a different year.  Monday was the 2010 wod and it was killer.  It combined Fran and lots of running.

I managed to finish in 16:15 which isn’t too bad at all.  I used a band for the pull ups of course, and I used 55 lbs for the lifts.  I didn’t do thrusters however, because my knees don’t appreciate that, especially combined with all that running so I did push press for this one.  We had also started with strength and we did paused back squats, sets of 3 reps.  I worked to 95 lbs but after running the day before I stopped at that weight.

I felt so good after this workout there was no way I was having an unhealthy dinner so I threw together this awesome plate.

I had made these Asian inspired turkey meatballs Sunday and they have been perfect for a pre or post gym snack packed with protein and yumminess.

Tuesday was another anniversary workout and we had two wods to do.  The first was 8 minutes of 10 push press, and 10 front squats.  The kicker was if you put your bar down at all during the 8 minutes it was 5 burpees to buy back in.  I used 55lbs which I knew would be heavy but it felt awesome and strong.  I just did lots of burpees.

The second wod was an AMRAP for 15 min:

200 m run

30 squats

20 push ups

20 lunges

20 sit ups

It was soooo nice outside so I opted to do the whole wod outside.  there were three of us that stayed out and it felt so nice with a bit of  a breeze.  I loved it.  I am feeling motivated and more on track than I have in awhile.  I am crediting mother nature for that.  Let’s hope she goes with it for awhile.

Holy Hamstrings!

I am hurting today!  We did deficit deadlifts yesterday and oh-em-gee I am feeling it today!  I see it has been awhile since I last posted.  Life has gotten busy.  And also kind of I just haven’t felt like it.  I am feeling a little social media overwhelmed lately.  I am wondering if I am becoming too caught up in it.  I find myself comparing… comparing other’s happiness to mine, their successes, body types etc.  It doesn’t matter what other people are doing… why am I letting it bother me?  I am debating taking a little social media break but haven’t hit the breaking point yet.

I took a break from here for a bit, but today felt like checking in.  So here’s what’s been up.  There was some action on the farm last week, they had a big sale that was A LOT of work for J.  He did an amazing job and worked soooo hard.  While I felt like I was single for a week, which wasn’t so fun, he did so amazing and it was fun to see it all come together.  I took the day off to help out and I am so glad I was a part of it.

I made it to the gym regularly scheduled but was super lazy with my food choices.  I am feeling pretty gross and am noticing my poor nutrition choices in the gym and how I feel every day.  I need to make some changes.  I checked in today with a weigh in and did the body fat reading and I am not pleased with the result.  I have really gotten off track.  I am not going to be hard on myself though.  It’s all part of the comparison thing I am talking about.  I have deleted a bunch of fitness accounts I follow on Instagram because I feel like it’s affecting my self esteem a little bit.  I need to do what works for me and basically just do me.

Despite my burning hamstrings and a killer workout yesterday, I got up bright and early today to hit the gym for 8 am.  There was a Strongman competition at my gym today so the workout was earlier than usual.  It was a big turnout so we had team workouts and it was a lot of fun.  So many of us that did yesterday’s class mentioned sore hamstrings.  It was kind of funny.  After the workout I got changed and we set up for the event.  A couple of us stayed and volunteered for the day.  I worked at the food area and ran the cash for the BBQ.  All proceeds went to Wounded Warriors Canada and they raised $500 which is pretty awesome for a small event.  I was so happy to spend the day with some of my favourite people hanging out in the sun raising money for an amazing charity.  I smell like BBQ now!

That’s what’s been up with me… we still have more weekend to enjoy which is pretty great.  I will leave you with this adorable picture of my niece with bedhead because she’s so cute.

Weekend Loving

This weekend has been beautiful weather wise which just makes it that much better. Friday night C and I went to a show with J’s mom and sister. It was at the local theatre and it was called “one hit wonders”.  It was a good show and a bit of a late night for C. 

Saturday morning we got up and had breakfast before hitting the gym. I made breakfast burritos.  


We headed to the gym and we did our workout outside which was super fun.

It was a team of four so two ran and two squatted etc.  Then as a team we ran another 800 or 400 m to finish.  It was an awesome workout and my legs are feeling it today. 

The evening was spent at a local bar/ restaurant with my in laws celebrating both my sister in law and my father in laws birthdays. It was a nice night and it wasn’t too late or crazy. 

I got up this morning and made my flapjacks protein pancakes for breakfast.   

I have decided I don’t like them enough to buy them again. I like the recipe I have used before better so I will probably stick to those.  

I went to the bootcamp class at my gym after that and it was a lot of fun. There was a good turnout. We did a bunch of different exercises on command and it was an amazing workout.  After the class I did some errands and then had a really nice super long chat with my bestie. It was so nice to catch up. 

C had swimming today and we decided to go out for dinner after. We went to Kelsey’s and it reminded me I really don’t love it there. I had an ok meal, nothing special.  Then home to prep some lunch stuff for the week. 

Now it’s time to soak up the last moments of relaxation before Monday (gulp) arrives.

We Made It! 

My favourite day of the week is upon is friends!  And we did it!  We made it here. I still have my sanity and I am ready for weekend mode.  


My last couple days have been pretty good. Thursday night I went for a quick run, probably just short of 5 km before I picked up C and her friend for brownies. They played outside and I did a little bit of ab work and stretching.  


Today went fast and that was awesome. I went to the gym after work and had a pretty good workout. We did some deadlifting and I kept it really light because of my back.

When I got home we had a quick dinner. I had nothing out so we opted for frozen pizza. I decided to health it up a little and made an amazing big salad. 


It was pretty delicious actually. Now we are off to a show at the local theatre.

What are you up to this weekend? 

Eating ALL the Things

I feel like this week has basically just been filled with stress and eating.  Is there a relationship?  I think there most definitely is.  I get stressed and all my will power goes out the window.  In addition to that, being stressed and being busy means less time for me to prep healthy meals, or just an increase desire to lay on the couch.


When I get home from work and the gym, I just want to relax… and EAT.  And since I have nothing prepared I just eat what I can grab, like pepperettes, cheese, ringolos, chips etc.  I will pack healthy lunches and snacks for the day and stick to them so well, and then I get home and scrounge like I am an animal.  Then I get mad at myself and start thinking well you already suck so you may as well enjoy it, and then I eat the last Jello from the fridge and a snack snickers washed down with a good sized glass of milk.

I am feeling self conscious about myself lately.  About the way things fit, and the weight I have gained.  The joke is that it’s “happy weight”- post wedding, more relaxed, loving life, just gaining weight.  The thing is, it’s not happy at all!  It bothers me, I don’t like how my clothes fit, and the rolls I am discovering.  Don’t get me wrong, it’s not THAT bad.  Most people wouldn’t even notice.  But I am really starting to notice.

Yet I am not noticing enough to stop and just be accountable and stop eating ALL the things.  I will complain about it and scold myself for it, but I haven’t stopped.  Maybe I need an intervention?  Maybe if you guys will scold me it will help?  Or maybe it doesn’t matter- do a few extra pounds really matter?  I just need to figure this all out I suppose and figure out what’s important to me.  And figure out what matters.

Tuesday night I went to the gym and my back was better, but still a little sore.  We did some sprinting outside and some prowler pushes and then we did a bunch of tabata workouts with different movements.  Wednesday night I made it again, and was much more sore after having my back worked on in the morning at chiro.  The strength was working to a heavy push press.  I opted out of the pressing because of my back pain, and so I did 200m lunges outside with another girl who also wasn’t pressing.

I just used the empty 35 lb bar for this and I thought I was way too light but I didn’t want to overdo it with weight with a sore back.  I wished it was heavier, especially for cleans.  I think cleaning an empty bar just feels weird.

I got home and made roasted turkey sausage and veggies in the oven and it was good.  I overcooked it a little as I walked away from it to shower and it cooked too long.  It was still quite yummy and made a great lunch for today with a small spinach salad.

Tonight is a rest night for me and I plan to soak up every minute of rest and think of the fact that the week is almost done.

Here’s What’s Up

Oh hi there!  I realize I have been a little bit MIA but the weekend got away from me there.  Let’s recap shall we?

1. Friday– I took the afternoon off work for some me time.  I went to the gym at noon and I enjoyed a nice strength session of deadlifting to a two rep max.  I was feeling strong and worked to 2 reps at 190 lbs!  Not bad right??!!  Then we had an awesome workout and sadly I can’t remember it enough to recap it.  I know I felt amazing when we were done and there were definitely pull ups in it and it was definitely an AMRAP.

After the gym I ran some errands and went and treated myself to a manicure.  I had a wedding to go to and since J was out of time my sister in law was my date.  We hadn’t had a night out together in a while and I think it’s safe to say we made the most of it and had an amazing time.

2. Saturday– it was an early morning and I was feeling a little rough after the silliness of the night before.  I got myself ready and as I got moving I noticed a lot of soreness in my back.  Fortunately I was heading to a chiro appointment that morning, but it turns out I did something my back didn’t like.  I am attributing it either to my deadlifting, though I never felt anything during or right after, or the fact that I wore a pretty high heel for a lot longer than I am used to at the wedding and after, on a concrete floor for the night.  It also may have been a little bit of both.

After chiro I headed to my parent’s house with C and my Mom and cousin and I went shopping while C had a day with her Opa.  We had a nice time and hit up the outlets.  I used my birthday money and bought a gorgeous new Cole Haan purse.  Then we had a nice family dinner.  Sadly, I was uncomfortable for most of the day because of my back.  The drive made it a lot worse, and I tried a couple things on when we were shopping and it was not fun so I didn’t do much in the way of clothes shopping.

3.  Sunday–  C and I got up from our sleepover we had Saturday, and we went out for breakfast.  Then we did some groceries and then finally it was time to go to the airport to pick up J.  We were both really excited to see him and I am so happy to have him home now.  On our way home we stopped and got something to eat and then had a nice quiet night at home.  I had to take some muscle relaxants because my back got really sore.

4. Monday– I woke up and once I was moving my back felt better.  Throughout the day there were moments where it got uncomfortable in certain positions but it felt better than it had all weekend.  It was a busy day and I ate lunch super late.  I had tried something new and it was a really yummy combination.

It was really good and I will definitely make this again.  The rest of the day flew by and it ended with a late off site meeting that meant I wouldn’t make it to the gym.  It was probably not the worst thing for my back.  It was a really warm day so I thought I might be able to get a run in, but sadly after my meeting it was rainy and super windy.

I did get a home workout in which included skipping, some arm work with dumbbells, goblet squats and then some ab work doing plank variations.  It felt good and I managed to find lots of movements that didn’t aggravate my back.  Dinner was steak and broccoli.  IMG_8672The evening was exciting because it was the Blue Jays home opener.  Sadly we weren’t at the game but we watched it on tv.  I think that gets us all caught up.  I will do my best not to be absent for as long but sadly life can really get in the way.  Rude.

It Finally Made Sense

Wednesday  was a range of frustration and excitement. I went to the gym straight from work and I was pretty excited to be there after a few days of not being able to make it. 

The strength portion was working on our hang power cleans.  I am comfortable with this lift. Until I approach my max weight. It gets heavy and I get nervous and it just gets so in my head.  I got stuck on 95 lbs just like I did the last time. I didn’t get it this time, it just wasn’t happening for me. We also were doing a push press after we cleaned it which I think also added to the pressure I felt. It’s silly really because I am just competing against myself really. 

I was feeling kind of bummed about not making the 95 lbs. Then we discussed the workout. 

1 min – 1 Turkish get up (right), rest of minute hang power cleans with a push press. 

1 min- 1 Turkish get up (left), rest of minute front squats. 

1 min- double unders 

We did three rounds then had a one minute rest and then did two more rounds.  I used 70 lbs for the first round and then dropped to 65 lbs for the rest of the workout. It got heavy really fast. 

I have struggled with double unders for over three years now. I keep practising, not as often as I should, but I do practise. Today I think something clicked.  I’ve always been told it’s in the wrists but I never got it. Today I sped up the wrists and they came so much easier. I got lots of twos and before I knew it I strung together three of them!  I stopped at three because I got so excited. 

It inspired me to practise even more now and get better. Now that I feel like I kind of have an idea what I am doing. It felt pretty amazing and I left the gym on a real high note. 

When we got home we made dinner together C and I. J is out of time so it was a girls night. We made tortilla pizza and I also made up some veggies.  

I bought a spiralizer a long time ago and put it away and kind of forgot about it. Last weekend I found it in a drawer when I was looking for something else. I didn’t keep the directions or the box it came in and to be honest I had no idea how it worked.  I grabbed some zucchini and played with it and I did manage to create a noodle like zucchini shape.   


I really enjoyed it. I know there are different ways to use it and I want to figure out how to make a thinner shape. I’m going to have to play around on the interwebs how to make this thing work. 

Anyone else use a spiralizer? 

Maybe I should invest in a better one.
